Spring Fling 2013

In April 2013, the RSCDS Manchester Branch hosted the RSCDS Youth Branch’s “Spring Fling” weekend of dancing. The weekend was held at Sale Masonic Hall and attended by nearly 50 young dancers from across the UK, with a fantastic time had by all.

Spring Fling is an annual event that is organised by young dancers for young dancers, with the assistance of the local branch and groups. Anyone aged between 12 and 35 is eligible to attend the weekend, which consists of daytime workshops and evening social dances.

The Saturday workshops included technique classes tailored for all levels from ‘beginner’ to ‘very advanced’, followed by a choice of either beginner or advanced Highland dancing or “Roy Goldring dances”. The Sunday morning consisted of a fun workshop devising and performing dances along to a common theme. Well done to the musicians for finding interesting and unusual musical accompaniment (including Disney theme tunes and the “Great Escape”) on request and at short notice!

The Spring Fling Friday night “nice & easy” and Saturday night social dances are open to everyone - regardless of age or experience - and were well-attended by local dancers from Manchester Branch and across North West England.

Many thanks go to the organizers: Gill Watts (Manchester Branch) and Nicola Waugh (Leeds Branch); the teachers: Catherine Livsey, David Queen, and Diane Rooney; and the musicians: Andrew Lyon, Ian Slater and Phill Jones for all their hard work in putting on such a great weekend and keeping our energy levels high and our feet moving.

Future Spring Fling venues will be: Lyon (France) (2014), London (2015) and Edinburgh (2016).
